Sometimes life just gets in the way of remembering our true nature. I like helping people find their inner core—so they know who they are and are able to express themselves freely.
Life is not always easy, but there is a ground of truth that sustains and supports us when we know who we are. Old stories often hurt and pain informs what we see and what we do. Therapy can help us pause—taking note of when the story gets in the way of being present. Therapy can honor all the good work your internal system has done to get you here. Therapy can help unlock/unburden those places that came into being to guarantee your survival.
Together we can understand your current distress by seeing the wisdom of symptoms as your internal protection. Through therapy this wisdom can be better understood and integrated. Through an inquiry/discovery process we can work together to transform old habits and transform your life.
Services Provided
Individual appointments for adolescents, adults & couples.
Areas of Expertise
As a practicing psychotherapist for 20+ years, my roots are in Family Therapy and various forms of Active Imagination. I am trained in Internal Family Systems and am a Trauma-Informed therapist. Personally, I work deeply to understand yoga philosophy. In all these modalities and paradigms there is a common thread of respect for the integrity and wholeness of the individual, couple or family. I love the sense of mystery that goes with exploring the gap between where you have been and where you think you ought to be. I work to help bring awareness to the parts of you that have worked so hard to help you to survive but that are now blocking your growth.
I enjoy doing working with Teenagers, Adults and Couples. I have a clinical interest in Trauma.

Easy, back-and-forth conversational exchanges. I’m trained in psychodynamic (traditional, Freudian) and trauma modalities. Areas of Expertise
I treat adults with anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, and trauma, including work-life balance, life transitions, changing jobs, aging, divorce, stress management, panic attacks, poor self-esteem, and difficulty being self-assertive.

A little about me…
I obtained a Masters in Social Work from Columbia University twenty-five years ago and began my practice working with traumatized homeless families and individuals in NYC. I have been delighted with the wonderful opportunities which have come my way since then. These have included: psychotherapy with children and adults who have been abused; starting up and directing a substance abuse treatment program within a shelter for homeless women and their children; starting up and directing a mental health clinic in the Times Square area; and providing training and supervision for programs across the United States and Canada to increase staff capacity to work effectively with trauma and co-occurring disorders in an integrated way. I am excited to be part of the team at the Trauma Center at JRI in Boston, MA. For thirty years they have been at the forefront of providing treatment and conducting research to address the needs of children and adults who have experienced trauma. Again and again, over time, I have been moved by the courage of my clients in their journeys toward self-discovery and transformation. I value mutuality and collaboration in the therapeutic relationship and recognize the importance of a secure attachment in the work.
Services Provided
Skills in both stabilization and narrative approaches. I provide information, guidance, and support as you work to create the life you want.
Level II trained EMDR clinician and use this approach in a creative and flexible manner to build internal resources as well as process experiences.
I do “parts” work which incorporates an understanding of Internal Family Systems (IFS) and structural dissociation. I have worked successfully with clients with high levels of dissociation to stabilize, build co-consciousness, work through traumatic memories, and move towards integration.
I particularly enjoy working with couples in which one or both individuals have struggled or are struggling with addictive behaviors and trauma-related difficulties
I utilize Seeking Safety, Creating Change, and EMDR protocols (including Detur and Feeling Addiction Protocol) to help individuals with trauma and co-occurring disorders receive support in addressing the ways that trauma has affected them and to increase emotional and physical safety in their lives in a compassionate, empowering way.
Areas of Expertise
Trauma and co-occurring disorders: addictions (alcohol, drugs, food, gambling, self-harm, etc); mental health (PTSD, dissociation, depression, anxiety, Bipolar, ADHD, etc); and health (HIV, Hep-C, Cancer, Chronic Fatigue, etc.). Together we will discuss the best ways to approach the issues you face.
Life Transitions: Transitions are a source of new beginnings and excitement as well as stress, grief, and pain. I will walk beside you…through the joys and struggles as you begin or end a relationship; relocate from another city, state, or country; start or end a job; retire; question and establish your identity around sexual orientation, gender, etc.
Grief and Loss: At times grief is a tidal wave of emotion, threatening to overwhelm and destroy. At times it is a deep pulling, tugging, sometimes gentle experience of loss. Other times it’s a “void”. As you experience acute grief… I am there with you… to navigate; come through to the other side; to address old losses that may resurface; to come to new understandings of all you’ve been through.

Martha Pedersen, Counselor, LMHC
I specialize in working with clients who suffer from anxiety and depression, work-life balance issues, relationship issues, and issues around self-confidence and “presence” at home and at work. Particular groups I enjoy working with and have experience with include college and graduate students, those suffering from the loss of a significant relationship, those working in the design field, and the LGBTQ community.
I love helping my clients improve their lives through insight-oriented conversation and behavioral change. I believe in helping clients become “experts” on themselves and their values, assisting them in developing coping skills and perspective so that they can lead lives that feel more relaxed, productive, and enjoyable.
One type of therapy I use with most of my clients is EMDR, which is a way of helping clients re-process the difficult things that have happened to them in the past so that they can see them in a new light and move forward with a healthier perspective on themselves and their strengths.
Since a good therapist/client connection is of primary importance, I prefer to have a twenty minute phone consultation with potential clients to be sure we are a good fit. My style is eclectic, conversational, and supportive, and I am willing and able to offer “homework” where appropriate.
